Boutique Style Over Substance

Obviously I'm a fan of boutique hotel design, but whatever category of accommodation one chooses, it's really the polish and service that makes or breaks the experience. Rome's Hotel Inghilterra has the former in spades, with a graphically decorated lobby, and eclectic rooms furnished in antique-chic style. But it's sorely lacking the latter as some of us found ants in our rooms, no one felt the air-conditioning was adequate for the Italian summer and the staff in general could at best be described as politely brusque. Hotel Arts in Barcelona was even more of an egregious disappointment - I wanted very much to love the sophisticated-looking hotel with its gorgeous pool and terraces, but the fumbling staff seemed borrowed from hotel school. This culminated in the placement of another guest's bag with our luggage upon our departure (a bellhop had to be sent after us to retrieve the bag). Here's hoping for better hotel karma on my next trip!
