Rereading The Masters

For Remastered, curator Sebastien Agneessens assigned well-known works of art to 55 contemporary artists and designers to reimagine in their own style. The results put classic paintings like Guernica, Starry Night and The Kiss into a modern context that refreshes our understanding of the images we have to come to almost take for granted. While Stina Persson's sensuous update of Botticelli's Birth of Venus (above) is visually gorgeous, I found Mark Alary's transformation of The Last Supper into Michael Jackson's trial (with Elizabeth Taylor and Jay Leno at the table) to be particularly adventurous and amusing. The book juxtaposes the old and new artworks side by side, and thoughtfully covers each project with an explanation of the original alongside comments by the artist who "remastered" it.
