Redefining 'Hotel Art'

I'm resolving to travel more this year, and actually find myself picking destinations based on great hotels! A cool new trend is for boutique hotels to incorporate an artistic element. At the top of my list is Hotel Fox in Copenhagen, which opened in 2005 as an innovative part of VW's marketing for one of its new cars. 21 modern artists/ designers/ illustrators were given free rein to decorate each room in a distinct fashion, with results ranging from urban chic to fabulously demented (Hort's room shown above). Closer to home is Hotel des Arts in San Francisco, which lets young local artists cover its rooms with bold murals; meanwhile Hotel Max in Seattle showcases one-of-a-kind artworks from local artists throughout the hotel's rooms and corridors. At the other end of the world, the Henry Jones Art Hotel in Tasmania actually changes the exhibits within its space like a museum, rotating over 250 works from leading and emerging Australian artists.
